The Young Hero Grant is awarded every 2 to 3 years to an up-and-coming documentary photographer who also works in the non commercial side of the field, who is under the age of 36 and not yet widely established. The jury looks especially for an enthusiastic and original approach to photography.

The Board nominates a jury made-up of two established and active members of the photography scene, to award grants.

The first Young Hero Grant was given to Joel Karppanen in February 2017. The jurists were author Asko Mäkelä and visual artist Maija Tammi.

Veera Konsti was awarded the Young Hero Grant in September 2022. The Finnish Museum of Photography chose the winner from among the six finalists selected by the foundation.
